Looks Alone Do Not Necessarily Constitute Beauty, It Flows From Within….

“For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge you’ll never walk alone.” — Audrey Hepburn

One of the last things I said to my mom when she was dying was “everything that’s good in me came from you and dad.” I really meant it. They modeled to me how to be a good person without them even knowing it.

We were poor. Five kids, one income. Our house was old. Warn out carpeting and an aluminum baseball bat propped to keep the oven door closed. Things that embarrassed me some as a youth, but reflecting back now I can smile about it.

My parents were kind people. They always saw the good in others, no matter what kind of trouble they got into.

There was definitely always room for one more at the table. If someone had no where to go for a holiday, they were at our house.

I remember the year I moved out a girl from my class had no where to live and my parents took her in for a while. They didn’t even know her.

Fast forward thirty years. Sam and I had a recovery house for woman in our home for a few years. We housed women who were trying to “get better” and had no where else to go. A warm bed, hot shower and unconditional love is what we offered them. Some of them flourished, some not so much. Life’s not easy sometimes…

Thanks Mom and Dad,

Kate💕
